Windsor Castle history
This castle has gone through thousands of years of development and results in such beauty. There were four rulers who left their mark and had a role in the development of the castle – William the Conqueror, Edward III, Charles II, and George IV.
William the Conqueror was the one who founded the castle and established its outline plan. Edward III (r.1327-77) rebuilt the whole castle in a magnificent Gothic style. Charles II (r.1660-85) transformed the Upper Ward of the medieval castle into a baroque palace. And George IV (r. 1820-30) was the one who restored the exterior with romantic ideals of castle architecture. He created richly furnished palace interiors with the ancient fabric of the building!
