The Guardian was one of the websites impacted by the outage.
An outage at a cloud-services provider caused numerous news and government websites in Europe and the United States to go offline for approximately an hour on Tuesday morning.
Sites of major news publications such as the New York Times and France’s Le Monde were inaccessible as of 6 a.m. Eastern Time.
“Some readers are currently unable to access nytimes.com. We are looking into it and will send an update soon,” the New York Times said on Twitter earlier in the day.
The list of webistes that were unreachable included some Amazon pages, the Financial Times, the Guardian, Reddit, and Twitch,.
The U.K. government’s main public-services portal was also down as a result of the outage.
The problem was traced back to Fastly Inc., a content-delivery network service that used by numerous publications. Around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, the company said that it had begun to fix the issue, and sites that used its service were beginning to become operational again.
“We identified a service configuration that triggered disruptions across our POPs globally and have disabled that configuration,” the company said in a Tweet early Tuesday morning, adding that “[o]ur global network is coming back online.”
Joshua Bixby, Fastly’s chief executive, told the Wall Street Journal that the company was investigating the issue, but that it wasn’t attack-related.
