Bloomberg’s ‘new’ Seven World Wonders no 3: Nahanni, Canada

Bloomberg has listed the home of Virginia Falls as the third world wonder on their list of ‘new’ Seven World Wonders, and we can see why.

Established in 1976, the Nahanni National Park is located along one of the many rivers in Canada, the South Nahanni River, and contains deep canyons and massive waterfalls.

Amongst others, Nahanni was one of the first to be listed as a World Heritage Site in 1978 and covers approximately 3 million hectares.

The South Nahanni River is a paddler’s paradise with four breathtaking canyons, intense rapids, and whirlpools with threatening names such as ‘Hell’s Gate’, ‘Tricky Current’, and ‘Lafferty’s Riffle’. River visits are only recommended to skilled and experienced paddlers!

For a more relaxed time in the waters, lakes such as Little Doctor and Rabbitkettle are perfect to catch trout, pickerel, pike, and grayling.

Virginia Falls is almost twice the height of Niagara Falls with a 96-metre drop and is divided at the centre by a pillar of limestone. Canyon cliffs rise to 610 metres at some points. Although it’s twice the size of Niagara Falls, it receives less than 1,500 visitors a year compared to Niagara’s 9.5 million.

Moose, black bears, and wolves are some of the 42 species of mammals that exist in the park, along with 180 species of birds found in the park too.

For a week-long canoe camping trip, Canadian River Expeditions are the best people to get a hold of for a full-on adventure in the national park.
