A hidden gem – Jatiluwih Rice Terrace



Spread across a sprawling 600 acres of land, once a UNESCO World Heritage site, Jatiluwih Rice Terrace is a treat to the eye. Located in the Tabanan district in the west of Bali, Jatiluwihrice Rice Terrace would be a 2 hr picturesque ride from any of the south Bali cities such as Kuta or Semiyak. A panoramic view of the Jatiluwih Rice Terrace with Mount Batu covered with low hanging clouds, scenic landscapes dotted with coconut and banana trees are synonymous with Jatiluwih.

Rice terrace in Bali use a particular system of irrigation called “Subak” which has been there from the 9th century. The rice fields are connected by canals, streams and tunnels and ensures water flow throughout. The mountain temples , 2 lake temples determine the time of opening and closing of canal sluices, ensuring that plantings are staggered and that water is allocated in the most equitable manner.

The Subak is an epitome of a harmonious relationship between Man and God, Man and fellow humans and Man nature in one’s daily life. It produces one of the best varieties of rice in the world which is one more reason why the Jatiluwih Rice Terrace and the Subak system should be preserved and remain sustainable for future generation. How to reach there?

Hire a private cab or rent a two wheeler from Ubud, Kuta or Semiyak. It will be a joyous 2 hr ride. Farm houses, Devi Sri temple, farmers engaged in harvesting or ploughing are sights to behold on your way. You are greeted with clean and pure air. Things to do:

Your rice field trekking starts here. You are rewarded with the breathtaking view of the terraced slopes of rice fields drinking in the sunlight. Palm trees and banana trees cover the rest of the area. Explore the fields all by yourself. There are 4 trails across the fields. You can choose the most suitable one. Exhausted? Quench your thirst with tender coconut water straight from the nature’s lap. A small rivulet of gushing water follows you all the way reminding you of the Subak system. Jatiluwih is 700 metres above sea level.

You can interact with the farmers along the trek and get to know the various varieties of rice, cultivation methods, their lifestyle etc. You will notice that everything is done by hand and no machines are used, which justifies it’s UNESCO heritage status. The path narrows to a single foot path with bamboo bridges across and they take you to the remotest corners of the rice terrace. The ripple of the stream beside accompanies you throughout leaving you mesmerised.

The tranquility of the place is enhanced by the gurgling sound of the running waters in the canal. You get a upclose view of the paddy crop, the mature corns hinging downwards like a bashful bride. A solo walk through the narrow paths may remind you of the Solitary Reaper of Wordsworth. DeviSri is the goddess of rice. Shrines can be spotted on every field to honour the goddess. A never ending trek across the rice fields is an exhilarating experience.

Cycling enthusiasts can hire a cycle to roam around this place. Lunch with a view is on offer by the locals. Sounds interesting right? Locally grown rice, vegetables straight from the farm to the table makes the meal unforgettable.
